The Founders of M & M Excavating, Inc.

M & M Excavating, Inc. was founded by Robert and Marjorie Martin in 1982. At the age of 16 Robert Martin went to work for Jefferson County Highway Department.

Then while serving his Country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War Robert was a Heavy Equipment Operator-Instructor. Robert helped construct airstrips, military facilities and was present during the testing of the hydrogen bomb.

After returning home Robert worked with several earth moving contractors during 1950’s and 1960’s as an operator-foreman helping construct much of interstate 40, The Foothills Parkway, Ober Gatlinburg and many other projects in East Tennessee. He later went to work for the U.S. Steel Corporation as a shift foreman.

Then in 1982 Robert founded M & M Excavating, Inc. with his wife Marjorie.

Marjorie Martin worked 23 years for the Jefferson County School System at Piedmont Elementary. During this same time and after retiring from the school system Marjorie worked several long hours as secretary and co-owner of M & M Excavating, Inc. Marjorie is currently active in the company and serving as Vice-President of M & M Excavating, Inc.

Together Robert and Marjorie built M & M Excavating, Inc. from one piece of equipment and one dump truck to twenty-three pieces of equipment and nineteen employee’s.
